The territory of Prosecco stretches along the foothills of Treviso, from Conegliano to Valdobbiadene, and especially along the valley of the Piave river. Here, between Valdobbiadene and Vidor, and then towards Pieve di Soligo, Conegliano and Vittorio Veneto, the territory is characterized by a continuous succession of hills and gentle slopes, cultivated with vineyards producing the grapes for the Prosecco and the Cartizze wines.
Conegliano and Valdobbiadene are the two main towns of the area: the former, known as “the pearl of Veneto”, hosts the Wine School and the major research Institutes of Viticulture and Oenology, thereby being the very cultural center of the area as well as the place where the follower of Garibaldi, Antonio Carpenè, started producing the Prosecco sparkling wine at the end of the 19th century; whereas the latter hosts the head office of the National Exhibition of Sparkling Wines and is the production centre.
The production area of Prosecco covers the whole strip of hills of the Treviso area involving a total of 15 municipalities, including Conegliano, Vittorio Veneto, San Pietro di Feletto, Refrontolo, Pieve di Soligo, Valdobbiadene, Vidor and amounts to 18 thousands hectares of agricultural surface.
The vines are planted only on south facing slopes and at a height of between 50 and 500 meters above sea level. Around 4,100 hectares of vineyards produce DOC wines , employing 3,300 wine growers in more than 100 sparkling wine cellars.
The wine district of Conegliano-Valdobbiadene is the most important in Italy in the production of sparkling wine by the Charmat Method.
The climate (the venetian aristocracy chose these hills for its summer vacation in the seventeenth and eighteenth century), the soil characteristics and the exposures of the hillsides to the south are unique features of the territory thereby suitable for viticulture.
