Our beginnings – Batiso

One food in the past and one in the future; the present of our wine

 
The name “Valdobbiadene” comes from the term “Duplavilis” mentioned for the first time by San Fortunato Venancio, as his hometown.

At the end of the eleventh century, the Emperor Henry V granted some feuds in the area of Valdobbiadene to noble warriors who settled in the Treviso area. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the territory was ruled by several lords: The Carraresi, Ezzelino Romano, The Da Camino and the municipality of Treviso. In 1391 all the Treviso area was submitted to the Venetian Republic of the Serenissima, which offered a peaceful period introducing its own laws, abolishing the feudal privileges and boosting the building sector, agriculture and others production activities.

During the venetian dominaton, in this area beautiful residences were built by venetian nobles and wealthy merchants of Venice. There the noble and rich families from Treviso and Venice, which introduced new activities related to the manufacturing of cotton, wool and silk, went to live in or just went on vacation in summer.

The presence of the vine traces its roots to the first century BC and to the time of the Roman land division of the Cenedese territory. The cultivation of the grape variety from which Prosecco is produced has been reported for at least three hundred years.

Historians say that he current Prosecco comes from the ancient Pucinun wine, which was appreciated by the Romans and produced in the Trieste-Karst area. Then that grape variety, classified under the name of Glera, might have been brought to the hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, finding an ideal habitat and producing even better wines than those produced in the original area. Over the years so vast was the expansion of this new grape variety that previous ones had been outclassed,such as Verdiso, Perera, Bianchetta, Boschera, etc.

From the second half of last century, Prosecco has become a white wine of great prestige, required in every part of the world, thanks to technical and cultural investments and to the studies conducted by the Wine School and the Experimental Institute for winemaking of Conegliano.

For several years now, Valdobbiadene takes great pride in its title of City of Wine and in its hosting the National Exhibition of Sparkling Wines, now called “Italian Sparkling Wines Forum” (Forum Spumanti d’Italia).

The Prosecco of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene is a DOCG wine whose certification is in force since April 1, 2010, and which is produced only in the Treviso area, particularly in the hills between Vittorio Veneto and Valdobbiadene.

Proseco is mainly produced as a sparkling wine in the still (tranquillo), slightly sparkling (frizzante) and sparkling (spumante) varieties.

Charmat method (also called Martinotti Method) is the most used for sparkling winemaking from which the versions Brut, Extra Dry and Dry are obtained according to the residual sugar concentration after the fermentation.
